What is solder paste? Classification of current solder paste

What is solder paste

Solder paste is an indispensable material in the welding process of metal surfaces. So what is solder paste? How many types of solder paste are there? And how to preserve solder paste after opening the lid? Follow the article below to find out!

What is solder paste?

Solder paste is a mixture of alloy particles and flux that is formed into a smooth cream. In which welding alloy powder accounts for 80-80% of the product volume.

What is solder paste

Compared with solder wire and solder bar, mills prefer to use solder paste. Because solder paste does not need to be melted, it makes the process of soldering parts simpler and faster.

Moreover, with superior wetting ability, solder paste helps components adhere to the printed circuit surface better. From there, the finished product will meet the desired quality standards.

Classification of current solder creams

Based on composition, solder paste is currently divided into 2 main types: leaded solder paste and lead-free solder paste.

Leaded solder paste

Leaded solder paste is a type of solder paste made mainly from 2 metals, Tin (Sn) and Lead (Pb) mixed in a certain ratio. Maybe 63% Tin and 37% Lead or 60% Tin and 40% Lead.

This solder paste has been restricted in use today because it contains lead in its composition. When welding, it will produce toxic fumes that are dangerous to human health.

Lead-free solder paste

Lead-free solder paste is a common and commonly used solder paste. As the name suggests, the composition of this solder paste will not contain lead, ensuring safety for human health.

Basically, the main material to create lead-free solder paste is still tin. Lead metal will be replaced by silver and copper metal and mixed in standard proportions of 96.5% Tin, 3% Silver, and 0.5% Copper.

Some notes when using solder paste

When using solder paste, you need to know some of the following notes to maximize its effectiveness:

Solder paste should be stored in a cold place between 2 – 10 degrees Celsius.

After opening the lid, if the time between uses is more than 1 hour apart, you should close the lid and open it when you need to use it again.

When taking the solder paste out of the freezer, you should let it sit at room temperature for about 2 hours before you start stirring it. Do not stir for too long, but only 2-3 minutes is enough for the solder paste to return to its original properties.

Before stirring, if you see small lumps on the surface of the solder paste, remove these lumps and stir.
